King Sejong, who created Hangeul, and the greatness of Hangeul
In the past, Koreans used Chinese characters when writing even though they spoke Korean. It was difficult to write Korean in Chinese characters because Chinese characters were based on Chinese language, which was completely different from Korean. Therefore, most people, especially low-class people, did not know how to write. In order to solve this problem, King Sejong created the letters called Hunminjeongeum, which is todays Hangeul.
Hangeul, the Korean letters, is considered as the most scientific writing system in the world. Unlike other Asian languages, such as Chinese or Japanese, Korean is composed of consonants and vowels so that people can easily write the letters as they pronounce without memorizing every single character.
Korea is a relatively small country in terms of its size. However, the population of the country is not as small; the sum of the population of North and South Korea is approximately 70 million. In addition, Korean language is even more highly ranked throughout the world. Among thousands of languages in the world, Korean is ranked 12th most used language.
There is a research on global language loss. Around 28 entire language families have been lost in past decades and only a few languages will survive in the future. Because of this, some people claim that Koreans should use English instead from now on so that next generation can use English as their mother tongue.
However, the language is not only used to communicate but also considered as a part of nations history and soul. The language reflects its nation. If a nation loses its language, then it will also lose its identity. For example, Manchurian is no longer considered as an ethnic group because Manchu people have lost their own language. Koreans were once in a situation where they almost lost the language under Japanese imperialism, but they overcome adversity and continue their national history.
Based on the fact that Korean is one of the most scientific languages in the world, the multicultural diplomatic reporters did the interview the students from different countries in order to see their perspectives on Hangeul. They discussed about the use of Korean and shared K-pop music.
< Arlington High School / TN, USA Interviewees: Diem, Julian, Melate >
Question: Have you ever heard of K-pop music?
Diem : Hello, this is Diem. I of course know some of K-pop music and actually listen to them. One of my favorite song is Wonder Girls Nobody
Julian: I also have heard of K-pop. I watch them on Youtube. Korean sounds symbolic.
Melate: This is Melate. I know what K-pop is but I do not listen to them that much. I know Gangnam Style by Psy because it is famous.
Question: Hangeul refers to the Korean language. Hunminjeongeum, a document describing an entire script for the Korean language, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage property for its scientific method. This interview is to figure out how many students know about Hangeul. Do you think Hangeul is a difficult language? Can you please describe your opinion?
Diem: I think it is difficult because it sounds like it is hard to pronounce. I would like to learn it if I get a chance though.
Julian: It is hard for me, of course, because I never use it.
Melate: I want to learn Hangeul. I want to learn how to write and how to read.
As a result, most students have heard of K-pop and showed their interests in Korean culture, but they think Hangeul is a difficult language. Despite its greatness, Korean language is classified as a difficult language among foreign students. It is necessary to find better ways to get close to Hangeul.
One of the popular methods used in class in order to teach other foreign students Korean, also practiced by The National Institute of the Korean Language, is following.
It is to introduce Hangeul as Korean alphabets. Hangeul is consisted of 10 vowels and 14 consonants: ,,,,,,,,,ӡ and ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, respectively. The Romanization is also introduced. For example, ,,,,,ӡ are written as a, eo, o ,u, eu, I and ,,,,,, are written as giyeok, nieun, digeut, rieul, mieum, bieup, siot. Unlike Korean, English is consisted of 26 alphabets and up to four consonants can be consequently written.
Therefore, English contains silent syllables, which do not exist within Korean alphabets. Korean alphabets have only one sound per alphabet while English alphabets have several sounds per alphabet. It is important to let the foreign students understand such differences between Korean and English.
Some exceptions, such as sound change, are also introduced to the students. In addition, matching some of the expressions to the K-pop lyrics is an effective way.
With this method, most of the foreign students seemed like they were interested in Hangeul even though it was not easy. Like this, providing various methods at the level of those foreign students would be a nice way for them to approach one step toward Hangeul.
Those who want to interact with foreign students should first understand what those foreign students want to learn about Korea and then share cultural backgrounds of each other, which include sharing languages.
